What impact did the BP oil spill really have on the Gulf of Mexico? This question will be debated for many years to come, but student scientists at ECOTEK Lab already have an idea of what the answer is. Keith Young Jr and Jordan Massey, future environmental scientists, worked in the lab to understand the effect of oil on the chemical properties of water. Afterwards, they packed up their equipment and traveled to the Florida Panhandle to see, first-hand, the 'real' impact of the BP oil spill.
While there, they performed soil/water chemistry tests and observed a variety of marine life. Some of the beaches that they visited included Nokomis Beach, Siesta Key Beach, Pensacola Beach and Fort Pickens-Gulf Island National Seashore, just to name a few. They also interviewed leaders from British Petroleum (BP), Waste Management Inc, the SBA, the Coast Guard, and NOAA to learn about the clean up effort and economic recovery strategy.
Those young men asked excellent, responsible questions. Very excited about their level of involvement. This is quite a unique and beneficial experience and opportunity for them.
