Think the guards want to do the undoable: erase past. Poor guys. They weren't indoctrinated, they had to play a role, just to survive. Pol Pot had his personal ideology, believing he's a God. Was he the first to do so? Do we dare consider hem as the last one?

They're not like nazi's, who didn't kill compatriots, family-members... but jews because of "racial issues". No, really, this story is different. There was no hate in their actions, only anxiety of P(ee)P(ee)'s regime. Judging is easy!

An utterly fascinating documentary. The one thing that stood out to me was the brazen aimlessness of Pol Pot's regime: at least with the Nazis, they had the whole "pure race" nonsense to use as an excuse. With Pol Pot, it just seemed as if he wanted everyone under his rule dead, which I suppose proves you don't need an ideology to commit genocide. The moral here? When your leader is man at his worst, expect a society of men at their worst. It's that plain and simple.

A lot of those guards were taken as children and indoctrinated. They were young teenagers when they were carrying out those horrifying orders. I'm not trying to excuse their actions at all, because words cannot describe the complete inhumanity of it all, but in a sense they were victims themselves. Forced to serve under threat of torture and death, knowing no other way. In a way it reminds me of 1984, only much more horrific and devastating.
