Wow. Pretty nice Modification. Looks much more like a real steam tractor. GREAT. How long did it take you?

Plenty of high temp bearing grease will shut the gears up, as well as 140w oil on the idler gear shaft.
More vids of engines running inside please, makes my argument with the missus easier to defend.......JIm

I like the clancky ringy gears on my old smokey!
The real steam rollers make a heck of a noice so I see no reason to quiten the gears down!
I also like the slower speed more representative of the real thing

As for the noisy gears, i notice that they ring like a bell when hit. Maybe gluing something like a ring of lead to the gears could make things a bit quieter. Beautiful model you have made there.Going to use yours as an example when i do mine.

That is an excellent idea...I will look into it and see if there is adequate clearance to allow such a sound deadening addition. Similar concept is used inside motorcycle grips where lead shot can be added to prevent harmonic vibrations.

where u get the wheels and fron rolls?
Mclaren1O 2 years ago
Rear wheels are from a Mamod TE...with those wheels inserted inside the outer Wilesco rims. Front roller has likewise had a Mamod "Insert" put in from both sides...these were wheels from a Mamod log wagon.

Don't know if thicker gears would solve the clashing problem...but it would present a clearance problem for gears, firebox and rear wheel which are in close proximity in the basic Wilesco design. I think to solve the clashing would take a re-design of the way Wilesco rollers and traktors transfer power to the rear wheels and change direction...I honestly don't know if a hobbyist could retrofit such a design. Try it and let me know!!!
