A taxi driver in Gibraltar shows how well he knows the apes - officially described as Barbary Macaques. He went on to say that there are five troupes of apes and, because they are territorial and can be aggressive, these troupes keep apart from each other, inhabiting different parts of the rock. At present there are some 230 animals in the five troupes. The apes are the last in the European continent, and, unlike those in North Africa, are thriving. They usually occupy the area of the Upper Rock, although occasionally they go down into the town where they can be very mischevious. As they have no tails, they are also known locally as Barbary Apes or Rock Apes, despite the fact that they are actually monkeys.

  • Ah yes, but they get a great deal of their income from trips up the rock, which many people do not want to do on foot and like having someone to explain the history. The taxi drivers are a bit cross at the moment because nearly all trips on Gibraltar buses are now free.
