i guess it comes down to personal taste,im sure richard has many fans....i have no doubts about his ability as a guitarist.....songwriter.....b ut i grew up with pink floyd and for me no one can match dave gilmour as a singer, songwriter and specifically...guitarist.....

Well, i too grew up with Floyd on my turntable, i agree about personal taste, but is it not possible to appreciate many musicians at the same time, for different style's of music?
Back in the seventies i was an ardent Pink Floyd fan, still am.
My collection of their work is complete, from first to last album, and the solo efforts, some of which are pretty awful actually.
I also have everything Thompson has ever done, and some of his early albums were a bit patchy.
I love them both equally.

I love RT (and LT's) version, but Gilmour makes a decent fist of it. I wish I could say the same for Bonnie Raitt. Love her slide playing, but damn.
