This was recorded on January 25th 1987 at the prestigious "Dover Lane" music conference in Kolkata. 2 days later, Nikhil would have a massive coronary as he stood up to answer the door during his daughter's birthday party. For Nikhil lovers, this is a most sought after recording....maybe a handful of people actually have heard it. I found it quite by accident while transferring my Sitar teacher's cassettes to digital realm. He recorded the concert using a reporter's interview recorder....quality could be better, but for Nikhil lovers....Its a pure gem. i'd love to get this out!!!-Josh

One more thing-the performance is a Darbari alap into a Hement gat.

  • I just recently discovered the amazing music of Pandat Banerjee. So amazing a talent was he. Thank you for posting these.

  • Nikhil Banerjee was simply a marvellous musician. His hypnotic, leisurely and majestic raga-unfoldment was and is a thing of joy and wonder.

  • I believe there's some mistake in your description, since panditji passed away on January 1986. Impossible that the concert was recorded on 1987, don't you think ;-)

The raga is, indeed, Hemant. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

  • This is Raag Hemant played soulfully. He w2as undoubtedly great Who is on tabla?.

  • At around 18:00 he seems to be playing Maru Bihag ?

  • yes, was lucky 2 hv been there. and NB, in his inimitable way, apologized for cutting it short due to ill health esp. coz it was DLMC. little did we know we'd never hear him again. all of us who recorded it have a special place for this one. btw, i notice this was uploaded day after what wudve been his 80th b'day.

  • thanks.
