LOCATION: Arturo's Coal Oven Pizza (Thompson St. & W. Houston)
GUEST(S): Cliff Campbell
ORDER: 1 slice of bacon, 2 slices of mushroom
PIZZA REPORT: Sean's delight. Rich in tomato sauce, crispy yet chewy coal fired brick oven crust topped with just right amount of cheese. Toppings are fresh and well distributed and the taste is just perfect.
ATMOSPHERE: There might not be such thing as a free lunch but at Arturo's, every patron enjoys free live jazz. There are plenty of seats, a considerate wait staff, and walls filled with art painted by the owner, Arturo, who proves he is not only a master of pizza. This is a fun date place. Without alcohol, you can get away with spending under $20 each.
VERDICT: 5 out of 5
MISC.:
1. Cliff Campbell tutors on land and on sea.
2. There is a store just south of Houston named "Sean". That's my name!
You're right Sean, Arturo's on a good night is really great. The problem is Arturo's is really inconsistent. I lived in new York for seven years and ate a lot of Arturo's very late at night. When it's good it's really good!

I hadn't thought that it may be different depending on the time of day...but it makes sense. Coal ovens take awhile to heat up and there's the "Italian grandma's wooden spoon" theory that says the more you use it, the tastier the food. Thanks for the comment!

Hows this get 5/5 when they got your order wrong AND it turns all stiff after 10 mins?? Pepes 4 LIFE

Crust stiffening rather quickly is a consequence of coal fired brick oven. Fortunately, the resulting pizza is typically so good, it rarely lasts long enough to completely harden. As far as the 5 out of 5, I stand by it. I did visit Arturo's early in the month which may account for some leniency but the overall pizza experience was truly superb.
