Laura Nyro's version of the famous song written by Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian Holland and Edward Holland, Jr.. The most famous available version is a single recorded by Martha and the Vandellas.

In this version Laura takes us to a different approach by making the song more melodic and the vocals are filled by the harmony group Labelle.

Taken from the abum "Gonna take a Miracle" , released in 1971.

I love Laura Nyro but I do not own her content. Please don't sue me! I'm only trying to study pop music.

The lyrics are very close to the original version but we have more words here and there. Please correct me if you find something wrong.

Jimmy, Jymmy, Oh Jimmy Mack
When are you coming back
Jimmy, Jymmy, Oh Jimmy Mack
You better hurry back

My arms are missing you
My lips feel the same way too
I've tried so hard to be true
I promised I'd do

But this boy keeps comin' around
He's trying to wear my resistance down

Can You hear me

He calls me on the phone about three times a day
Now my heart's just listening to what he has to say
But this loneliness I have within
keeps reaching out to be his friend

You're my guy

I'm not getting any stronger
I can't hold out very much longer
Trying hard to be true
But Jimmy he talks just as sweet as you

  • Initially, before I heard the album itself, I was so sad Laura wasn't writing any original lyrics for "Gonna Take a Miracle" but just doing covers. Then I realized she was doing them with Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendrix and Sarah Dash!!

Laura was a sweetie-pie ... she'd bring tears to my eyes one moment ... and a BIG smile the next.

"Save the people, save the country NOW."

  • @MrJuxtapoz2010 Or Patti Labelle? Laura Nyro is a legend and her talents (whereas the talents of anyone) defies race. If you don't dig it that's fine but you don't have to be tactless.

  • @MrJuxtapoz2010 She was merely paying tribute to her idols. Do you also think that the 5th Dimension were stealing her white songs?

  • Another white person steals a black song.

  • Absolultely great, better than the original

  • Laura had super powers.

  • Now I grew up from the age of ten on Martha & The Vandals, aka The Vandellas, and I love their Jimmy Mack version version still, but when Laura Nyro's Jimmy Mack came on the radio the first time I heard it, I nearly had a car accident! I had to pull over to the side of the road and listen and I cried for the beauty of the love she embedded in the music, and , for me, still it transcends the original. Thanks for reading,
