OK, that makes sense. The stones are being heated for later use. For immediate use, the stones impede the heat given off by the stove and act as a insulator.

Det høres ut som du har en 'sustained pulse combustion', av samme meget effektive prinsipp som en pulse-jet(prøv et search her på youtube f.eks.) hvis det er tilfelle, vil du merke at den er MEGET varmere, og kvikk at koke kaffe, når den pulserer. Eller du kan vri den opp, slappe av og la den brenne normalt så den varer lenger.

Real russian portable stoves are pretty high-tech. I picked one portable in Germany generating some 50 watts energy while burning wood you can get via connectors. It can power a bulb, to power laptop and recharge a cellphone at the same time.

really nice looking stove, would be interested in more details
if you insult the stove with large stones you defeat the purpose of having the stove in the tent.

Can you explain that ??? I have done so for accumulating heat - for the night ...stones are hot in the morning ..

Yup its stainless steel.. - yes its very cosy especially if it rains and is harsh weather outside :)

Maybe it was pumping because of a layer of ashes at the bottom blocking the air draft? When you turned the draft around to the top it was burning cleaner and more completely, as shown by the lack of smoke.

I think the pumping sound was because the fire inside was demanding more oxygene - than could be sucked in through the vent ... there was no ash ...
and i think it was the woodgas that burned when the ventilation was turned around :-) ...but im not sure
