It's easy to make the case that Tiger belongs in the top _group_ of all-time best players. Of course he does. I just object (as sretsam does) to the nonsense posts that put Tiger as necessarily and indisputably the best player of all time--typically from posters who have no idea who Jack or Hogan or Snead (or Nelson, or Jones) were having to beat, no clue what an enormous difference the equipment and course conditioning make, etc.
Jack also had a real job and other stuff going on in his life (like an actual run at a pharmacy degree, because he was seriously thinking about taking over Dad's business and just playing great amateur golf). Was selling insurance to support himself and his wife, while in college. Point me to any other top player who had a real job to go to, whether in college or not.
0.25 john regis says tiger by a mile (what a dick) its ok to say tiger is the best but adding by a mile , what a tit.if you brought a 22 year old nicklaus into this era he would be amazing with the equipment.its only tigers amazing short game that makes him the best.if were talking about ball striking alone then nicklaus hogan watson are right up there with tiger.
I can't entirely disagree with that. I've been on discussion boards where some still consider Bobby Jones the best. Since eras can't be compared without error, no one can argue with that, either. Jack's testament to the game will be the completeness of his overall record and longevity of great play. Tiger's will be dominance of his competitors. Of course, the last two statements are my opinion.
I don't necessarily think either of them should be put as the undisputed greatest. I think its unfair to compare them on many grounds and I personally will always see them as the two greatest.
Anyway, I just would like the media to keep things in perspective when speaking of the two. I accepted after Tiger won the 2005 Masters he would exceed 18 Major victories. Maybe it was the symbolic 50% mark. Again, for me to accept Tiger as the undisputed greatest, he will need to sufficiently break 18 Majors (i.e 25 or more) and I don't believe he will.
In addition, Jack had setbacks, too (hip and back problems, wife's miscarriage, etc.). Since there was no 24-hour news or Internet, the public was not inundated with it. Also, when Jack arrived, he had to knock off the then-equivalent of Tiger (Palmer). Palmer was not as talented as Tiger, but he was every bit as loved.
I understand. Jack at this point in his career had 53 wins to Tiger's 65. Based on that, Tiger should hit 90 wins or so. In Majors, Jack had 12 to Tiger's 14. Based on that, Tiger should have 21 or so. Jack already passed Jones. Jack had four kids to Tiger's one. Not making excuses, but Jack was focused on Majors, thus continued to pare his schedule. I also guess he wanted to be with his family.
What about the fact that Tiger has almost already beaten Jack in the all time PGA Tour victories. Its also very much a possibility that Tiger could reach the mid 20s in the major count which could equal the amount that Jack took the standard or indeed beat it.
