Having grown up in the First Baptist Church of Marietta, I had the impression that separating whites from blacks was the idea of the white church members. Come to find out from Ms. Lamuriel Adams, historian at Zion Baptist (founded in 1866 by freed slaves who left First Baptist) that the African-Americans wanted their own church. Differing musical styles were a major part of the reason, as Prof. Oral Moses of Kennesaw State University explained in a series of lectures for Black History Month that the church hosted in its old sanctuary, now a museum.
