Canned Heat Blues

Tommy Johnson

Recordingdate : Friday 31 Aug. 1928, Memphis Tenn., Vi V38535, Victor, B-side : Big Fat Mama Blues

Note :
Tommy Johnson was a great country blues singer in Mississippi, in the 20:th and 30:th.
It's difficult to reconcile Johnson's drunkenness and his difficult emotional with his wife, Maggie Campbell, with the artistic poise of his singing.
He was one of the most consciously artistic of all the Mississippi singers.

Enjoy !!!
Peace !!!

  • as a homeless little kid, i drank this stuff twice.

then i started doin other things. terrible what lengths some (including myself) have gone to to get fucked up, but what great blues it makes

  • 'Canned Heat' was the methyl alcohol in 'Sterno' cooking fuel, it wasn't even ethyl alcohol usually found in alcoholic drinks.

'Meths' is terrible stuff and will kill you very quickly, but a lot of African-Americans in the south at the time drank it.

  • @monkeytown1000 Thank you very much for the information ! I didn't know ! Much appreciated !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Brother !

  • Let's not compare these greats.

Each one of them has a message we can understand and what's fantastic is that each one has his style, his groove and soul to discover.

I love them all from CharliePatton to BB King.

  • @lamiamano Youre right Luca, there is no need to compare all those great Bues artists. They all have their own style, but one thing in common : FEELING !

Thanks for the comment and listening !

    Peace Brother !

  • You can tell by the way Tommy wrote his songs he was a very honest man. This addiction eventually drove him to a heart attack and his death. Were very lucky to have these recordings.Nobody and i mean NOBODY can sing a song like Tommy Johnson could.RIP TJ

  • man...this song is full of torment and despair....its a very sad song..its the real fucking blues...imagine being hungry ,skint and addicted to parrafin[petrol, gasoline type of substance]. you can hear this horror, madness, shitty life in his voice and the music. it aint easy listening, its more like a history lesson or documentary.only an artist can communicate this but to me its not enjoyable its educational.

  • @kickingmule not methyl alcohol per se - just ethanol denatured with it.

  • @monkeytown1000 particularly the homeless! a lot of homeless communities mixed it with fruit juice and drank it as a mixture called "jungle juice" or "squeeze".

  • @seymourbbest Thanks Mark !
