Eine klasse Aufnahme, um zu zeigen dass eine überholte Ortophonic Schalldose und ein entsprechend großer Exponentialtrichter auch bei einer "modernen" Schellack akustisch nicht in die Knie geht.

This record is a good example, that a rebuilt Victor Ortophonic soundbox and a big exponential horn could play also a "modern", loud 78rpm record without blasting and distortions with the treble.

  • why is the spindle threaded and is that a victor orthophonic soundbox,i really want to get one of those, my gilbert tonearm arrived but unfortunatelly the black paint was flaking off so i had to spray it again other than that a great tonearm

  • @kirtley2010 The motor is a electric one, from a record cutting lathe, so the spindle is threaded to screw the the record on the turntable.

Yes, it is a orthophonic soundbox.

Althoughit is a pot metal one, I was able to open it for rebuilting. It now has a new made diaphragm by Lee Kirk. Sadly Lee passed away in 2010, and no one took over to make these fine diaphgragms.

  • @formiggini so are the pot metal ones sealed or were the screws stuck, are there any of his diaphragms left or are they all gone?

  • @kirtley2010 Many of the Orthophonic diaphgrams are OK, but to my ears the new one sounds better ;)

The trouble with the pot metal ones is, that they swell over the time. So you cant open thme, or they crumble into many pieces if you try to open them.

This will hapen with many boxes made for Credenzas between 1925 - 1930, but not with the boxes made for portables, like the one you see in the video.

  • what a nice tune, i cant put my finger on what colour the horn is, it sometimes looks brown sometimes silver sometimes gold

  • @kirtley2010 You´re right - it´s a metalic varnish. So, according to the light incidence, the colour changes a little bit.

  • da is Gentechnik im Spiel, jede Wette, so nen Trichter is noch nie natürlich gewachsen...sfg

  • @formiggini thats a shame, hopefully someone might decide to make them again and it is interesting to have a electric motor, i want one to go with the gramophone i am making with a emg mk 9 horn but i cant find one

  • You are a genius. I never thought of using pasta to connect a soundbox. Sounds great. Thanks

  • Beautiful sound (and a tune too)!

  • Fantastic sound! Please upload more!
