Phil Hardberger was elected Mayor of San Antonio on June 7, 2005. He promised that if he was elected mayor, he would immediately stop the city's policy of gassing pets in the city pound in the city's gas chamber. Twice a day the city pound closed to gas pets in their gas chamber. Over a hundred pets a day - daily average - FOR YEARS. The pets were crammed as many as they could in small cages on wheels that were then wheeled into the gas chamber. From the outside, you could hear the pets screaming as they were being gassed inside the chamber. Their bodies were then dumped at the city landfill. Over and over I heard how many of those gassed pets were still alive, some able to struggle out of the landfill area to die who knows where elsewhere. The city pound holds hundreds of pets daily. Of the hundreds of pets in the city pound, only a handful were selected for the adoption kennel area where they stayed until adopted or they became sick with kennel cough. When they became sick with kennel cough, they went to the gas chamber. Kennel cough is like a nasty cold that lasts a couple of weeks. Every pet I took out of the city pound, as a volunteer rescuer, within a few days became sick with kennel cough. Not a problem since the vaccine against it is part of the yearly immunizations veterinarians recommend for dogs so my personal pets were protected from catching it. Think of it as a flu shot for humans. I was a volunteer helping to adopt pets at a city pound before moving to San Antonio. I was shocked that the only way we were allowed to volunteer at the San Antonio city pound was through having our names approved for the rescue list for a specific purebred. We paid the same fee adopters paid for a pet. Repeatedly I was told not to send anyone down to the city pound to look at any of the pets I knew were down there. The person in charge of the city pound was a retired military vet who called my visits to the city pound 'slumming'. I could only foster two to three rescued pets in my home where they stayed until the right family was found to adopt them. Any additional pets I rescued from the city pound, I paid costly boarding fees when there were no foster openings for them. A daily average of over four a day of pets of the breed I was signed up for were gassed in the San Antonio city pound's gas chamber. To be accepted on the rescue list, we had to belong to a local organization that I despised after reading its newsletters' venomous and falsely slanderous attacks on other pet caring groups which included the Humane Society and SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program). My name was replaced on that organization's rescue list with the name of a local breeder who badmouthed the pets in the city pound completely opposite my position of recognizing and promoting their value as valued companion pets -family members with of course the same need of guidance for new owners for their care and handling as pets bought through a breeder or given away... How many good volunteers/rescuers were kept from helping the pets in the San Antonio city pound by that organization's monopolizing agreement with the city pound? From time to time there was an editorial comment in the local newspaper on how many pets were killed in the city pound but it wasn't until November 14, 2004 when the local newspaper ran a front page article detailing the horrors of San Antonio's city pound that some of the desperately needed changes at the city pound began. For all of the changes that have taken place over the last three years, including allowing volunteers to work inside the city pound, the city pound holds over 500 pets daily average, kills over 80 pets daily average, allows only a very small number of those hundreds of pets the opportunity to be adopted, continues to misidentify the predominant breed of many of the incoming dogs, does not post to breed specific lists on the Internet which can help find their owners, potential adopters, and rescue openings, and the city pound still does not have a program to teach care and handling of pets for San Antonio pet owners. Does the city still sell the cats coming into the city pound to research? Did the city pound provide larger dogs, like the breed I was signed up for as a volunteer rescuer, to area military personnel for weapons/ballistics research? In San Antonio, Texas, my value is the same as that of a pet in the city pound. It should be obvious from the videos I've uploaded to YouTube that San Antonio is a dangerous and violent city to live in for women who are not protectively socially networked, no matter what their educational level or how much of a need there is for the knowledge, skills and experience that they have. Furthermore, considering that those involved in sport targeting 'unprotected women' for the 'woman by herself treatment' are in professions responsible for the health and safety of civilians, and the known research on stalking and gang stalking, congressional action is needed.
