Singing and playing together helps open and resonate the sound, place the embouchure, and control the air quantity. It can be used as a warm up or extended technique as in Ian Clarke's The Great Train Race (see my performance video of this piece), or in Jazz, as in Roland Kirk!

If you want to beatbox flute like Greg Patillo, this will help. I can't teach you how to beatbox, but this will help you combine your beatbox with the flute!

This technique is also discussed on the second embouchure flexibility video of fluteloophost and in Robert Dick's Tone Development through Extended Techniques.

  • hi nina, i've been playing the flute for a while and started to do this naturally. but i found that the best thing i did for playing the flute with this style of playing was to learn the dideridoo, it really opened up my vocal chords and made my tone on the flute my better .

  • @collington22 COOL! Maybe I need to take a trip to Australia...

  • can u please tell me what flute model were u using in this video and tell me how much it costs

  • @tekola001 In this video I was playing a sterling silver Burkart flute. You can look up prices on the burkart website.

  • just curious but does it matter whether you sing in head or chest voice into the flute? Im assuming you could sing into the flute with either register, just wondering if it truly matters what register you use tho

  • @Zombiemuffins13 I prefer to use a low singing tone and don't strain your voice

  • Thanks! :-)

  • YES, THIS WAY OF PLAYING FLUTE IS VERY DIFFICULT. IT´S USED A LOT IN JAZZ MUSIC AND ROCK SINFONIC, SOME OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THIS WAY OF PLAYING ARE: IAN ANDERSON WITH JETHRO TULL AND THIJS VAN LEER WITH FOCUS.

  • I am sooo scared to post a video of myself playing flute......

  • wauu, master level =)

  • I'm learning to play the flute, but I'm using a bamboo flute.

I'd like to make it sound like a regular flute.

Is there any major technical disadvantages that I should be concerned with?

(Btw, I never tried a metal flute.)

  • What you talking, you are just blowing

  • Are you a Flute teacher too?

  • thats so cool. it does feel weird

  • Hi Nina, My student sings and plays, not voluntary, how can I reverse this? so that he can play both ways, at the moment he cannot play without singing, your videos are great by the way, you have an amazing sound!!! :)
