A quick video showing the process of carving the likeness of an Easter island Moai.
This took me just under 3 days.
Bare in mind that i have modern tools, and this was cut from a single piece of stone(which i could flip and turnover),whereas the inhabitants of Easter island cut theirs out of the side of very large stones, crawling into the rockface to remove the excess.
I cant imagine doing it without steel tools. How they did it is a mattter of conjecture.Im guessing they must have used plant acids to weaken the bonds in the stone, and then a stone harder than the work piece to rub, chip,or sand it.

  • You sir, deserve your own show.

  • @combatcommand thanx for the encouraging words =)

  • what kind of rock did you used? Remember Moais were carved from tuff, a very soft rock made of compact volcanic ash.

Several unfinished Moai statues, were left unfinished because the islanders found harder rock amid the tuff, so, unable to carve them, they just started a new one.

  • @rogerpenna its sandstone from the Sydney basin.i would say it is medium to hard density in regards to sandstone.some is too soft to work, and weathers too fast.the kind i used is easy enough to work and will last a long time.thanx for commenting
