@elegeto Yes, the apparent wind is that which is generated by moving forwards. But as long at the true wind is still at an angle to the boat, the resulting vector is not 100% from the front.
This is why multihulls cannot sail directly downwind. If they point directly downwind yes, they overtake the wind and stop. Therefore to make progress downwind they end up sailing at roughly 160 degrees off the wind, and have to 'tack downwind' - i.e. gybe from one reach to another.

@jibberwick I always thought apparent wind was the wind that was generated by the wind going past the boat as the boat accelerates- true wind being wind whilst stationery and apparent is the wind against you whilst you are moving in a direction- how does apparent wind work for you since it is 100% infront of you, not 95% or something that could be sailed close hauled :/

What multihull is that? I thought it was Géant Casino of Michel Desjoyaux, but I guess it's another one.

jibberwick. nvm my comment. im confused. i kinda get it but not fully as i dont wanna think reading all that stuff lol

i was reading about physics of sailing and so far you cannot sail faster than the wind with it behind you. if your right then i have to read more

@kless001 If you were sailing with the wind behind you then it definitely would defy the laws of physics to move at 20kts in 12kts of wind. Google for the Physics of sailing for a detailed explanation.

Starting with 12kts of true wind, the boat then generates apparent wind as it accelerates. Simplifying things by not taking into account angles/vectors: 12kts true wind to start. Boat starts sailing and accelerates to, say 6kts. The apparent wind (the wind 'seen' by the boat) is now 18kts, so it goes faster. The apparent wind increases and so on until the drag of the hull/rig increases to stop further acceleration. Ice yachts sail at around 5 times windspeed!
The video was taken in 1992. The first boat is Fleury Michon (sp??) the second Group Pierre, Florence Arteaud. (again sp??) The video was taken from my Sagitta and we were doing 9 knots when they overtook
Of course they go faster now!
