  • Great song sad topic. John writes them well. One of the first he performed for Kris Kristofferson when he auditioned for him. Steve Goodman set up the meeting.

No that's not it. "The PAST is running faster." His father was a stranger. Wanda was a hooker. "Polish all that chrome.." "Come on baby spend the night with me." As she gets older fewer men show up. "Jimmy's growing up now Wanda's growing old. The days are growing shorter the nights are long and cold." She kept diary that Jimmy finds. He kills her and jumps out the window. "His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes."

see my response above your posting..

Wanda had a baby 1951 the father was a stranger.. so the father was unknown. The line about "Polish all that chrome" has to do with performing a sex act. Wanda was a prostitute. Jimmy finds out that his mother was a prostitute after reading her diary. He kills her and leaps out the window.. "His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes." Come on baby spend the night with me" is the line that Wanda uses on the stranger.

  • @cart49able The "past" is running faster, singin' harmony.

  • I saw him in New York - Avery Fisher Hall aroung 1975. He had a large group behind him. His hair was below his shoulders.

  • "The bastards running faster singing harmony". His father was a black man.

  • @slickrick431001 It is about a kid John grew up with who was always in trouble and one day a judge told him, "No wonder you are a little hellion, your father is your father and your mother is your sister." John wrote a song about it, but changed the way the kid found out and how he reacted. In the "Greatest of John Prine: Early Days," that story is in the CD cover.

  • @CactassDupree yeah but about what? Did Jimmy find something that he didnt know about "in the diary" that had been kept in the closet and then end up killing himself from what he learned? And what could it have been? Has to do with the schoolyard and all that im sure but cant seem to get the whole story, guess we can just use our imagination..
