In 1927 design submissions for a large rigid airship scout were requested. The winner of the competition was Goodyear-Zeppelin's entry; which would become the USS Akron in October of 1931.

  • An imaginative video of the loss (in 1933) or the United States Dirigible U.S.S. Akron.

    It was destroyed in a storm in the Atlantic Ocean off New Jersey. Among the lost men was Vice Admiral William Moffett who advocated the developement of Naval Air Power. In all 73 men were lost - the worst loss of life in the history of zeppelin developement (and more than on the Hindenburg in 1937).
