Once known as Africa's green city in the sun, Nairobi is so choked with traffic that these days, the Kenyan capital is anything but gleaming. Traffic has been reduced to a gridlocked sea of cars and the government reckons traffic congestion is costing Kenya $ 460 million a year due to lost productivity, fuel consumption and pollution. The city is suffering from maddening congestion due to a combination of failure to update road networks, bad drivers and swarming minibuses, better known as matatus.
