壮族大歌 - Grand Song of the Zhuang People (广西艺术学院附中)

An amazingly inspirational group dance from Guangxi Province in southern China. First prize in choreography and performance, 7th Taoli Cup. The title of the dance is also the title of the song.

The dance is based on a Zhuang legend and starts out silent: the people had wondered what the end of the sky looked like. A pregnant young woman volunteers, leaves the tribe and embarks on her journey. Along the way, she gave birth to and raises her son, he grows up, she grows old and still haven't reached the limit of the sky. She grew feeble and he inherited the dream of his mom and the entire Zhuang people. The journey continues, one generation after the next, in search of their dream.

Zhuang and Dai are distinct ethnic groups. The Zhuang lives mostly in Guangxi/Guizhou provinces while the Dai is mostly in Yunnan.

Each ethnic minority has its own dialect(s).

Are the dancers featured here Zhuang themselves?

Not necessarily, but the dancers were students of the secondary school affiliated w/Guangxi Arts Academy. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are ethnic minorities, if not Zhuang.

The term 'Dai' is actually confusing because you can also use it to describe all Tai people like Zhuang, Dai in Yunnan (it is better to call them Tai Lue), Lao, Ahom, Li , Bouyei, Dong, Shan (Tai Yai), Tai Dam and 75% of Thailands population etc.

very good bcoz my ancestors' origin also the Zhuang(壮族)

maybe 2 others beside Shaoli and Xiao Yu are Zhuang but Li Hong, her sister Ping (both primary dancers in this troup) are Hann as are a few of the others.
