Not all of her songs are sad and creepy. Horse And I, for example, is mystical without a hint of negativity. I Saw A Light tells a simple story that is in no way creepy.

These are just my own interpretation of her lyrics. Whilst there is an element of what you describe running through some of her songs, I don't believe that it is the prevailing theme through all of them.
