In April of 2011, SETI announced that due to budgetary constraints their radio telescope array would be set into hibernation mode. This is video is unofficially produced on SETI's behalf by Reid Gower, with the aim of starting a grassroots movement to reinvigorate funding for the SETI program.

After seeing the Vancouver Riots you can see why Sagan is worried about the human species. So many civilization is just skin deep. We have lost our awe of the Classics and our ability to be lead by the wise. We play with toys like ipods and do not understand how they really work. We are going no where fast.

This is easily my favorite part of the Sagan Series. The zoom into that picture at the end gives you an idea of how incredibly massive the Universe is.

I understand the software of an ipod intrinsically. The hardware? A little bit, but not enough that I could currently create one myself even with all the right tools available..
Thing is, it wasn't one person who invented the ipod. The majority of people in the world have skill sets which they can combine to create technological applications. What matters is not that each person understands the how to construct the whole, it's that each person contributes what parts they can to attain the sum.

Personally, of course, I think life is not exceedingly rare within the observable universe, however I think intelligence on our magnitude is unimaginably rare, the complexity of our biology is incredible, the complexity of a tree is amazing, but anything with a conscious is a leap in front of that, and then us in front of that. Not to be a 'man in his arrogance' but I do believe it will be we that 'conquer' the universe, provided we don't kill ourselves.

what if we are the most technologically advance race. what if we are the ones who should be sending the messages for them to pick up.

Are you seriously proposing we where ever different ? There are those who push us forward and those who pull us back. There always has been, the difference today is we may have more pulling us back, but those who push us forward are much stronger. We may think it is worse today, but in reality it has never been better.

This man inspires me to live, you know. Whenever I fell upset I recall his words, they really cheer me up. They give hope. :) WE FINALLY DECIDED TO LISTEN.

As long as we all do our part, anything can be achieved. Even, quite possibly, the hardest challenge of all.. Keeping the great majority of humanity from falling behind as science pushes us forward into the great and wonderous unknown.

"...(SETI) costs less than a single attack helicopter per year."
Yeah...the problem with that cost is, the warmongering bean-counters would rather have the attack helicopter. Better that SETI and NASA have that kind of budget instead, I say.
