Haggling 101 should not be confused with what happens in the real world more often, which is interest-based negotiations. Here they are just haggling over a price in a one-shot deal. I've gone in pawn shops and found it more beneficial to establish some rapport and get them to like you, then start talking about the item, and only then start discussing a trade.
