This event was held on the grounds of Halifax Common from June 24 to 28. Membertou (pronounced, "mem-ber-too") was the great Chief of the Mi'kmaq First Nation. The Mi'kmaq were the first inhabitants of Nova Scotia before the arrival of European settlers. Chief Membertou was kind and generous toward his people. When the French arrived in Nova Scotia in the early 1600s, Membertou greeted them with open arms. He even shared the Mi'kmaq language and culture with the French settlers. On June 24th, 1610, Membertou was among the first native peoples to be baptized into the Christian faith.
Membertou 400 celebrated the legacy of Chief Membertou; the Mi'kmaq people and the diverse cultures of the First Nation. The Pow-Wow included the various tribes of the First Nation people from both Canada and the United States. To this day, the event had been the largest Pow-Wow gathering.
