  • I always thought this film was made in 1932?

  • 1933 is the American release date, I think.

  • Wonderful! Thank you. The BFI Southbank screened The Good Companions and other films during its Tribute to Jessie Matthews a few years ago.

  • @1912cunard You are correct. Jessie does a brief Charleston in Evergreen. Everything you said about Jessie I agree with 100%!!

  • What a clip. Jessie Matthews was an incredible dancer who felt the music and moved accordingly. I love her cat like dance move. I bet she had fun making her films. The film scores are a favourite of mine and as I like 30s music, there are some good numbers in her films. I bet she was good at the charlston, in fact I think there is a scene in Evergreen where she does the Charlston . Top earner for Gaumont. Hey thanks for uploading this film clip. I really enjoyed it....

  • Notice the Duo-Art concert grand at 0.05.

  • This is from 'the Good Companions', which was just a wonderful and heartwarming British Depression-era movie, based on a very famous novel.

  • My Favorite Lady.

    What a star.........

  • Edmund Gwenn played Jess Oakroyd one of the major characters in the film adapted from the excellant book by J.B Priestly.I saw this lovely old film years ago and think Gwenn was off to his daughters in Canada.

  • Unless I'm mistaken, besides John Gielgud, there are two other well known actors in this clip: Finlay Currie (who played Magwitch in Great Expectations) as a man in the audience, and Edmund Gwenn (later in Miracle on 34th Street) carrying a valise up the gangplank at the end. Neither of them speak. Interesting.

  • loved it!
