Anthropologist Wade Davis warns that half of the world's seven thousand languages are set to disappear within a generation and explains why this threatens our survival. His book "The Wayfinders" is based on his Massey Lectures.

  • Some people don't think this matters. Inferior cultures die out and inferior species go extinct. The problem is our civilization is still dependent on all of this diversity. Civilization is built on agriculture which requires pollenation. The bees are dying out around the world. A recent study demonstrates that diversity of plants helps bees have stronger immune systems. Mono-culture itself might be killing the bees.

  • It's disheartening the disconnection of our culture from reality. Reality tends towards diversity, but our culture has been destructive towards diversity. The diversity of other cultures is being permanently destroyed. Directly connected to this, the diversity of ecosystems is also being destroyed. The diversity of indivenous cultures that was dependent on the diversity of ecosystems are being destroyed together.
