This weekend, "60 Minutes" aired a special on the record number of children falling into poverty due to the recent recession.

Taking a closer look at Florida in particular, the segment focuses on several families who never thought they would be homeless, and the children who perhaps suffer the greatest burden, growing up without a stable dwelling and sometimes going hungry.

Several children are interviewed. Two of the kids describe sneaking into a Wal-Mart bathroom to use the sinks and to clean up before school. One child says she feels that her family's poverty is her fault because her parents have to support her.

Some kids are living with neighbors, some in cars and vans, others in motels. Near Orlando, on the road to Disney World, there are 67 motels that house about 500 homeless kids.

According to CBS and the U.S. Census, 14 million children throughout the nation lived in poverty before the recession hit, and now that number is 16 million -- a 2-million person rise in two years. via -- Lori Kozlowski L.A. Times

  • Capitalism is an interesting system, but it is fundamentally flawed. The best profit margins doesn't always align with what's best for the country. That's why America had to include socialist ideas in order to keep its people from dying in the streets. Yes, our country depends on money, but the methods in which to earn a profit have to be imperfect - it has to allow for enough revenue to care for its people. A perfect method of earning a profit has no regard for humanity - it is mindless.

  • @Tlinsh YEP! It is called false class consciousness. These people who vote GOP are true believers. They are convinced that somehow, someday they will be let in the club house. We are a country of fools.

  • Never heard of this guy before, but I like him. I feel so bad for these kids.

  • @cunningham360 The 8 years of the Bush administration created this crises that Obama is fighting to get out, but as usual, republicans are trying to destroy the US as usual, and whatever he tries to do, it will be a bunch of idiots behind trying to destroy it and make him guilty of the mistakes that wasn't his.

  • I wonder how many kids could be fed with that 100 billion dollars Obama has raised with all those 35,000 dollar a plate fundraising dinners he's had. Maybe this should be titled "Obama to America: Poor kids have enough, give more to me!" His promise to end hunger went about as far as the end of the speech where he made that false promise.

  • No worries mate. . .with the signin of NDAA, these little whipers will simply disapear & no one will be the wiser. . .They'll be runnin their AGENDA 21 Sustainable sheit as well. . .D's & R's=criminals all! After they're done roundin-up all of these, they'll come after U for reporting it.. .just sayin

  • . fucking rediculous . when are we gonna waake the hell up.

  • Its called that fucken portch monkey as a prezident and other shit wont do anything about it plus them damn ritch bastards in washington dont care I hope they all die They deserve to rot in hell

  • Profanity wasn't nessessary to prove your point, however I agree that the United States needs to act and stop this endless blame-game that continually gets nothing done but more debt. There are problems with this country, but it isn't alone. The U.S. is not the only nation suffering right now. People everywhere are starving, children everywhere are starving. Leaders everywhere aren't trying. We need to compromise and try to build up instead of cut down. Hate jsut brings more hate. We all feel.

  • Humans, nothing but savages with clothes to grant a sense of sophistication. The largest area to witness such primitive savagery? The United States of America. People here actually have the nerve to be offended when they're called animals. This pretension is palpable. There's NO excuse for 25% of children to starve. That's when you know a populace doesn't have any courage or common sense left, when it passively accepts such atrocities as this. Keep playing the "trickle down theory" game, idiots.
