Keith Olbermann (long a respected newscaster, sportscaster and sport historian) interviewed Eddie Frierson (as Christy Mathewson) on KCBS TV channel 2 in Los Angeles on the anniversary of the "Fred Merkle Incident." Merkle, a rookie for the New York Giants in 1908, did not go from first to second base as the game vs the hated Chicago Cubs ended on September 23 of that year. He did nothing wrong or out of the ordinary in doing that but was tagged the rest of his life with the brand new never before used word --- BONEHEAD. Olbermann understands the unfairness that this brought Merkle in his life and with the help of "Christy Mathewson" he helps get Fred off the hook for the pennant loss in 1908 --- NOT a bonehead.

Hi Eddie. Interesting to hear of your interest in Christy Mathewson. When I was 15 I became friends with Joe wood the great Red Sox pitcher. I was 15 and he was 89. It was quite a thrill for me and still is to to this day. I was friends with him until he died.
I read where Mathewson played some ball in Taunton ,MA, not too far from where I live.

Yes, he played in Taunton but the team folded financially so he (and the other players) was not paid what was due him per his contract. It almost caused him to give up the game professionally.

No wonder Fridrich & Hooper Realty was such a tough team to beat in Junior Knot Hole Baseball back in the late 1960's. I thought we played against Eddie Frierson, but it was Christy Mathewson. Eddie's sister was a star basketball player from Nashville and later at UCLA.

Top of the list overall. I would put Walter Johnson number two close behind.
