Artist Notes: While the blending in this painting may seem more advanced than my others, the truth is I'm very familiar with a multitude of techniques that I sometimes opt not to use. I feel this painting combines my love for hard lines, bright colors, and my love of the surreal.

The concept of this painting may seem simple by face value, but it's actually a bit deeper than some may imagine at first glance. I put on my ipod, went into my typical trance state, and my subconscious came pouring out onto the canvas. This piece depicts several possible things, a bad joke at her expense (can you see the thoughtless laughter as she feels eaten up by it & in shock?; a verbal attack, an argument... or perhaps she is wearing this mouth as a costume... all of these things are possible.

The colors chosen for her face all have symbolism... one blue eye / half of her sad perhaps from this verbal betrayal from someone or maybe even herself, a green nose / jealousy & being nosey perhaps, blood where her ear should be / perhaps she heard something she didn't like, or her ears were screamed off. Her face depicts shock & innocence.

The serpent-like shape of the mouth's body, combined with the black & white checkered body, all gives off a sense of "clowning" or nonchalantness about what is being done verbally. The mouth is coming from behind her back, and this also holds meaning. The colors of the tail purposely match the colors in her face, possibly showing how she is either consumed by this mouth, or perhaps she is also the mouth. Perhaps the attack is more figurative rather than literal, but no matter how you slice it, the power that our mouth holds is apparent, and it's definitely a reminder to know when it's time for silence & humility, and when it's time to speak. I hope you enjoy!

  • There was something so cool happening with the eyes that you were painting and your hair!!!!! I like what you said about collaboration with the music that you listen to......I try to do one work of art per day (Its almost always a person). I try to do it the second after I get home from work/school etc. And I usually get inspired reflecting on the day. I then scan the work and turn it in to a PNG file (Like a sticker)...That way, my reflections talk to one another :)

  • (Cont') I saw that too and it took me to a different place than may have been intended. Having the serpentine tail emerging from this supposed city had me reflecting on society and I saw the duality of it's coloring, RGB for the media nonetheless, and black and white checkerboard, like lies and the games people play with one another, all coming together for consumption. And the look of shock in her eyes, mouth open as if caught by surprise, as many of us are when being devoured whole... So deep.

  • Well done! Verbal attack on anyone isn't nice, especially domestic, great piece, thought that was the teeth falling out from the verbal attack, but I see that's the body, LOL!, Just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks a Million! keep going CandyAcidReign Loved the Artist notes.

  • @Cre8iveSignWorks Thank you!

  • very nice art!

those teeth look like real pearly whites!

  • @ Jay4457, that's got to be one more thing that make her videos even more interesting. The art work is most def off the hook & I'm becoming more & more drawn into it esp bcoz Dessa has us watching & guessing where she's taking us with each piece, but the extra sauce and gravy in the choice of fitting music definitely makes her work more memorable as we connect sound with art we see come alive right before our eyes!
