A ballista is an ancient war machine. Originally the word ballista was used for what we know as a Roman stone-projecting catapult. My ballista would be in Ancient Greece called "oxybeles".
It has been built according to an old Greek formula from the third century BC. The maximum range is 122m (400ft). It shoots arrows that weight around 100g (1/4 lb) that are capable to pierce 3cm (1,2") thick wood. I have built it with my friend in 2 weeks during my summer holiday in 2009.

Please send comments. If you are at least a little bit interested in catapults, trebuchets and similar war machines, do not hesitate to contact me.

  • hey can u please message me ans explain how u helt the tension on ur "skeins" aka the ropes... is it like a rachet system????????

  • No it isnt - just friction.

  • wow guys looks GREAT but isnt that powerful, i know i build ballistas aswell!!!!!!!! post up my vin ini 2 weeks! any whoo two problems!!!!!!! wht rope did u use, polyworks best!!!!!! and the tension wire needs to be tight!!!! extremely tight...

  • It was very difficult in terms of rope. We used a PP 1cm (5/12 inches) thick rope. However, we are going to build another ballista, which is going to be more according to an old manuscript (Belopoica - hope you know), and we will probably use a PAD 1/6 Diametros thick braided rope. It should be better. I am looking forward your ballista!

  • You remind me of myself and my cousins, although I admit even we never built a full scale ballista. The scholarship required to research this device, the engineering acuity to replicate it, and the and the dedicated labor to construct it, nevermind your excellent choice in targets, make me hopeful for the future. That you no doubt considered all of this as simply "fun" only increases that. The lazier couch potato types have potential to advance our society, but your kind will lead them.

  • hahahahah Great guys!!

  • did you make your arrows, or did you buy them?

  • @sekundan D:<
