In 1971, cult leader Jim Jones established the headquarters of the Peoples Temple on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, CA. The building is now a US Post Office, and a local survivor of the cult's 909 member mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978 remembers what it was like in the early days of the Peoples Temple.

There were quite a few people in the cult that didnt want to drink the poison, but they were forced to drink at gun point. To tell you the truth. I rather have died by the gun shot to the head than drink that stuff.

It was getting violent sometime that night. In pictures you can see carnage.... tables turned over,ect... an arrow through one of the flavoraide tanks.... probably a missed shot at someone. It was known there were people with crossbows lurking around. Point is, there was murdering goin on.....

What kind of people would have allowed themselves to get caught up in this cult?

Were they weak, stupid, looking for fun or a purpose?

I have a theory about why most victims were lying face down. We know that the first to die were the children. At one point in the tape Jones is heard saying that it's ok for parents to lie with their children, (he even called it "humane!!!") This leads me to believe that up to that point, someone else or more than one person were laying the children down alone as they died. The parents and others just followed suit and went face down as the kids were. Any ideas on this? I enjoy the debate.

Soon as word got around that this man was sleeping with other members wives, and committing acts of homosexuality with the men, that in itself should have told everyone there what kind of sinister seduced sinner they were following. @SanjisGirl I am also very weary of religion . I was born into the Jehovah's Witnesses cult . I had no choice. I saw alot of hypocracy growing up and doctrines that were not true.(I always questioned) when I got old enough I moved out on my own and left it behind. I read 2 books that helped me get through the brainwashing/mindcontrol :"Crisis of Conscience" and"In Search of Christian Freedom"by Raymond Franz (A former governing body of the JW's)I try to live good.
