The main solo to Robben Ford's Revelation. I just go straight into the solo, which begins some 2 minutes into the original track and I end it by playing half of the main theme. Learned it by ear from the original recording a couple weeks ago (and two weeks ago I found out he plays it on the Blues & Beyond video... have to find the full video somewhere!). Tried to figure it out in detail, but the run at 1:56 slips by my ears just a tad too fast. The backing track is a midi I got off the internet (it's quiet because I recorded it quite late at night, the camera even picked up my breathing). There's quite a couple of mistakes in there (I blame the sleepiness :D ) and off-tempo moments (where I was trying to remember what comes next ;) ).

The tone: Ibanez GRG 270 with Fred DiMarzio in the bridge (I'm using only the bridge pickup with some volume knob manipulation, the rest are a DiMarzio Evolution in the neck and a DiMarzio SDS-1 in the middle) into a DigiTech RP50 with some small battery powered Phillips speakers plugged into it. Yes, the Mesa Boogie Studio is taking a nap :)

  • @Masterovermind It's not that jazzy or complicated - the first lick is playing down the scale by skipping the tone inbetween (just listen to it and you'll figure it out - I think its called "playing the scale in 3rds"); the second lick is again, using the same shape, playing up the scale and ending with a short pedal lick (using a static note and playing descending intervals). The key to Robben's playing = following the chord changes and alternating between major and minor licks.

  • @Masterovermind Im sorry those riffs I was concerning were specifically at :57 and 1:16

  • question, what do you feel is the significant aspect of robbens style that mixes the jazz lines with the blues lines. If you can think about some of the lines you played here, what are you actually doing theareticaly speaking at around 1:00 and 1:20. Hope to hear back. You sounded great Btw. - GUy

  • great smooth sound! i can't believe you got it with poor grg 270 guitar and rp50 processor!!!
