My dream became true on that day of May 1998 during a visit at the British Columbia Forest Museum. Since a visit in 1995, I became pen-pall with a volunteer engineer at the BC Forest Museum.

This is part 1, riding in open gondolas. Part 2 will be The Cab Ride.

Stay tuned!

  • Did I miss the part where you are riding in the cab?

  • @wwebtime Yes. It's on Part 2, right here Tpsq0ZM7ilA

  • Nice shots! Is this a Lima engine?

  • Yes, it's a 1911 - 42 ton Class B 2-truck Shay locomotive built by Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio for the Bloedel Stewart & Welch company as No. 1

You can check for her on the bcforestmuseum web site

  • Interesting... the Foster Brook & State Line engine is a 1920, #3118 build, built originally for Goods Road Construction Co. of St. Lois. According to Doug, this is 1 of only 5 24 inch gauge engines with 3 cylinders built. He thought his was the only one left operating. Might be good to get these guys talking!

  • From one former BCFmuseum who saw my vids and mailed me privately: That Shay is now stopped and set on display. No plans - and funding - to repair her. So, I'm proudly posting these two videos of her running. And, as a tribute to its engineer who past away the year after I visited him and made this film.

  • Tis is beautiful Shay - it is such a shame that there's no funding to run her!! On the other hand it costs a fortune (and then some) to run a private railroad !!

  • What a lovely whistle! That engineer could really make it "sing" The Shay @ Yosemite Sugar Pine (in Northern, CA) has a nice whistle too. I got to ride in the cab there.

  • Good for you !

But here it's a video about a 2-truck Shay that is not at CSR, nor at Roaring Camp. And she deserves her 15 minutes of fame just because she exists !

    That's it.

  • Very Neat old Locomotive. I got a kick out of seeing those push pockets on the corners. They have them painted Red. That is an awesome sounding bell it has.

  • I hope so, the 25 is a neat engine, but nothing compared to the shay.

  • My first ever steam cab ride was aboard this darling little hog in the summer of 1974. She may yet run again. Sure hope so! Thank you for posting!
