Also called the "hook and lateral" play. Executed perfectly by the Miami Dolphins against the San Diego Chargers in an NFL divisional playoff game in Miami on January 2, 1982: QB Don Strock to WR Duriel Harris to RB Tony Nathan. San Diego ultimately won in overtime. 41-38.
I was at this game. Sat in the corner where the hook and lateral took place.

I was at the game, i was 16 years old and i remember the play as if it was yesterday. Im 46 years old now and i work as a police officer in Miami,,i was working a high school football game and had the opportunity to meet tony nathan who was helping to coach one of the schools. He said hello to me as he walked by and i told him i was a boy when i saw that play in the orange bowl. We ended up having a short conversation about that game and that play in particular. Those were great times in the O.B

Pbrealtor -- that must have been a remarkable day in your life, I'm really happy you had that experience. I was ten or so years old, truly overwhelmed by the whole see-saw affair -- up 24 points, then down, then tied, then OT, missed field goals, blocked field goals, my heart was in my throat for much of the game as a die-hard Charger fan. Strock was simply unbelievable that day -- awesome! Too bad Woodly had a tragic death later on. Those Dolphin and Charger teams were loaded with heart!

@BanditosYankees I was in the stadium that night.. greatest game I have ever seen, bar none. And that play, well, the crowd was in total chaos all the way through halftime after it. Strock played great, Fouts was great, Kellen Winslow was phenomenal. I've been watching Dolphins football since 1967 and to this day have never seen a game so exciting, even in a loss.

But then you gotta throw Kellen Winslow into that list as well, and perhpas the great Charlie Joiner. The list is long, my friend. The Brian Sipe Browns had some awesome talent as well, Ozzie Newsome, for example. Warren Moon belongs on that list as well. In fact, I would put Moon above Cunningham. But fact is, none were as deserving as the legendary Dan Fouts. What a leader! What a damn shame he didn't get to the Super Bowl in 1980 -- the Chargers would've won it all that year against Philly!

What a terrible shame the GREAT Dan Fouts never won a Super Bowl. What a damn shame! I loved that Charger team... cried so many tears as a kid for the horrible loss to the Raiders in AFC Championship in 1981, the cutting defeat in the brutal cold against the Bengals in the AFC Championship in 1982... all of those guys, including JJ, the team of my childhood, my lost innocence, an era long gone, but never forgotten... the memories, sweet and sour, all hold true to this very day.

God bless the GREAT Kellen Winslow, the greatest tight end of all-time, for his HERCULIAN effort on that glorious day! It's a joke about Shula filing a complaint with the NFL for Winslow taking novacaine or whatever. Shula was the biggest cheater in pro football -- the same guy who flooded the Orange Bowl field the following year against the Jets, with the help of all night sprinklers, so as to slow down the Jets offense, ala, the infamous "mud bowl," which the Dolphins won (the AJ Duhe game).
