Dale McGowan, Executive Director of Foundation Beyond Belief, gives advice on what Secularism as a worldview can learn from religious worldviews. While we may do some things great, there definitely a few areas that we are lacking in and we may be able to build on those areas by learning from religious communities.

  • @bloodhoof1000 The slogan "Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater" means save the good get rid of the bad. Not everything about religious practice is bad. If you merely cut out the religion, religious practice can be quite beneficial to some. i say "some" on purpose. No one is suggesting that ALL atheists join communities. But communities are definitely needed. It's a failing of atheists if nonbelievers are going to church to find community. There should be alternatives (without dogma).

  • I hated the way this wound up being a sales pitch for making donations to their organization. I wouldn't have minded a mention of F.B.B., but, had I been in the room I would have felt very uncomfortable.

I did enjoy the lecture and information.

  • McGowan has a lot of sage things to say about the topic of atheism/religion ~ for anyone who's NOT familiar with his book "Parenting Beyond Belief", definitely check it out :)

  • @bloodhoof1000 you wrote " but if we all (atheists) took this guys advice we would be acting like religious people."

Is there something in particular about that that 'bothers' you? Do you think that 'acting like religious people' is _always_ a negative? (i'm an atheist, by the way)

  • I always thought it was crazy when religious people called atheism a kind of religion, but if we all (atheists) took this guys advice we would be acting like religious people.
