Yesterday afternoon, he was lagging behind while we were hiking around Anza Lake in Tilden Park, when he said, "Dad! I see a huge green slug!" It was crawling along right next to the trail. It was about 9 inches long, deep, rich green, and covered with a very viscous, sticky slime. After he had seen all he wanted, we turned it loose in the shady greenery away from the trail. It took him five minutes to wash away all the slime on his hands!
For those of you in the neighborhood, it was just about twenty yards past the changing rooms where the blackberry bushes are growing over the chain link fence around the swimming area, just before you come to the really muddy spot in the trail under the copse of pine trees. I'm pretty sure it was ariolimax columbianus.
That is a huge slug! Brave little boy, too!
