I think it's either unfair, or amazingly inspirational that this man can be that talented of a player, that good of a singer, and that great of a song writer.

I saw Richard Thompson perform this song live a couple of weeks ago (2001 Oct 4 - Cincinnati). He had way more fun with the instrumental part than shown here. This song alone was worth the ticket price, but we also heard Beeswing, 1952 Black Vincent, Persuasion, I Misunderstood, Unihabited Man, She Twists the Knife Again, Crawl Back, Walking on a Wire, Francesca, Johnny's Far Away, Sunset Song, and a few I've forgotten for now. This was the best concert I've ever seen.

I love this video and watch it quite a lot. I love the magnificent camera "zooms". It's a hoot! The sound quality is extraordinary.
Thank you for posting this, it's excellent.

folks, put more RT live performances on tube. a big part of his records suffer from, i'd dare to say, absolutely misguided overproduction which never does justice to show what a brilliant musician this man is - the songs, guitar playing, singing. bright lights, feel so good, this one - they all suffer on the record.
-
Definitely and interesting technique. Must have taken a lot of practice to learn to maintain that bass rhythm while picking with his fingers.

@dhuinn I agree, the sound quality doesn't need to be perfect when you got a perfect player in frame. BTW love the description, "worryingly brillant" very accurate.

Funny, we always think of RT as some kind of folkie but I would respectfully suggest that he's the best -and certainly the most inventive- Rock'roll guitarist the UK has ever produced.
I love the video. Such a fun song. I've never seen him live. As a guitarist, I'd love more closeups of his left hand. Overall though, a great video. The sound quality is great.

I got in more left hand closeups on 1952 Vincent Black Lightning and Crawl Back, I think... have you had a look at those two?
Glad you've no problems the sound quality, my wee camera surprised me actually!
