Here I was walking along side a big bad John Deere R pulling the sled at the 2008 SVTA antique tractor pull.

@shanes66charger If speed didnt help, pulls would not have a speed limit. 1st gear is for loading the tractor on the trailer. 2nd gear and up are for pulling. Lugging the crap out of an engine will break cranks faster than it being "cranked thru the moon"

That was a very nicely tuned John Deere. It ran out of power right before it lost traction.

Luggin it down ain't hard on rod bearings at all. He has the RPM's cranked through the moon on it, With only two main bearings it won't likely take those R's for too long. As for gearing.........The only gear to pull any old 2 lung in is 1st. They were engineered to pull max load in 1st. With enough weight hangin on em, you'll go farther in 1st every single time.

I love good ole rice pullers....but you cant expect to much in a 8-9K pull class with 50hp. But I love the R's. Sweet tractor

at the end he lugged it waaaayyyy too much, thats so hard on rod bearings.

I'm a John Deere fan, but I do believe that old R isa highly overreved.
