Peace on Christmas Day came to me whilst I was walking along a rural canal near my home. Suddenly, I felt that an old man was walking beside me, and he said "We called him Hans, we didn't know his name"...Within half an hour or so, this song had written itself as I walked home in the October sunshine.

  • Thanks, Paul.

I did one of the choruses in German because I like to think that Hans survived the war, too. I can't claim the credit for the translation though - that was done by my friend Ina, who lives in Germany. I've written quite a few war songs - my great grandfather was in World War 1, and I still have his medals.

I perform this song whenever I'm playing a new venue - I usually say that I want to be the first one to do a Christmas song this year :-)

Yes, I must get to Germany...

  • Thank you; that people from Germany like this song means so much to me; it is my fervent wish to play it live in concert there one day soon.

  • Hi Mark,

A touching story beautifully sung !

Reminiscent of Garth Brook's- Belleau Wood.

I find it particularly touching that you sang the last verse in German

and got me thinking that if we all sang our songs in foreign tongues that we could bring more peace in the world.

I do hope you can do that concert in Germany soon !

Best to u ! LA Guy
