From his academic roots at Cornell and MIT, and his journey from UCSD engineering professor to entrepreneurial founder of Linkabit and QUALCOMM, Irwin Mark Jacobs has had a major impact in the engineering school that bears his name, UCSD, San Diego and the wireless industry. In this documentary, Jacobs as well as friends and colleagues talk about Jacobs the man, the academic, the visionary businessman and the philanthropist. [4/2004] [Science] [Show ID: 8200]
Thats touch unfair (your comments). Jacobs was instrumental in really shaping the promise of Shannon's remarkable theory into reality. Also, don't forget that he co-authored one of the best books on communication "principles of communication", which is still considered as true "principles of communication". True, he doesn't have his name associated with any algorithm, but both Viterbi and Jacobs are incredible and great legends. I don't see a harm in earning more money through your handwork.

So ugly. Professors suck the ass of a businessman just for funding. A shameful scene on US academic system.
When Qualcomm falls down some day, people will still remember Viterbi for his decoding algorithm. But Jacobs, and his empire, will disappear.
