From John Schlesinger's 1967 adaptation of Thomas Hardy's book. Bathsheba (Julie Christie) has a meeting with Sergeant Troy (Terence Stamp) on stunning Iron Age hill fort Maiden Castle in Dorset, UK, where he shows off his skills with a sabre. The evocative soundtrack is by Richard Rodney Bennett. For further info see terencestamp.com

  • aww, this seems worthwhile seeing. i wonder if it's available on DVD outside UK.. also didn't stamp & christie had an affair during the shooting of this film? anyways, they seem to possess certain chemistry. and stamp is hot even with the mustache.

  • Stamp had briefly dated Julie Christie a few years earlier, but during the time of filming he was totaly smitten by Vogue model Jean Shrimpton and at the end of each weeks filming in Dorset would drive home to London at top speed to be with her.

  • I love this film, but cant find it on the movie sites ive looked at.Any ideas where i can find it on the net?Thanks.Zola.

  • are you looking to buy it on DVD, or just find web sites with informaton about the film?

  • A wonderful film. Julie Christie truly marked the arrival of the sixties in film; in Billy Liar, swinging her handbag, walking down the high street of a grimy northern town. Also, of course, a John Schlesinger film.

Thomas Hardy (and Dorset) are gifts to cinematographers. Despite the period in which he set his novels, he was truly a modern a writer of modern sensibilities, long before DH Lawrence.

This clip is stylised and camp, but is one of those cinematic memories which remains forever.

  • Stamp was a good looking b**tard wasn't he eh!

  • YAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

  • This part was filmed at Maiden Castle :-)

  • @bethshebah err she knew Gabriel was in love with her, she simply wasn't with him.

  • TCM has shown this in the US a number of times. Wonderfully filmed, although the symbolism (such as here - sexual tension from a man attacking a woman with his dangerous sword) seems really heavy handed. It's lovely to watch.

  • Julie Christie is the most beautiful actress from the 60s.

  • lollll

  • Bennet said if you wont sign the contract somebody else will so why doesnt he get a lawyer what is he a british tea bag
