Emergency Department Physicians Growing Weary of Frequent Users

Henry Ford has a program to help manage frequent ER patients. These patients can elicit negative reactions from our physicians. A nationwide survey was conducted to find out if this was a local problem or a problem across the board. The survey should the 97% of Emergency physicians are seeing frequently presenting patients. 91% of physicians say that this is a problem for them.

Emergency room physicians are feeling burn out, because they are faced with "medical issues" such as homelessness, lack of transportation, and unaffordable medication. 70% of physicians stated that there is a need for a social program to help deal with this issue.

  • She has that wrong. Its the nurses that call around trying to find a shelter. Its the nurses that do the bulk of the work and calling families and friends. Please get this straight!

  • Whatever happened to holistic care and the social determinants of health? How does one cure any disease while homeless with lack of nutrition etc? OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO COME BACK TO THE ED when no one is helping them solve the WHOLE picture!
