When I saw this movie, no one in the theater got up until the end of the credits. I think we were all waiting, hoping to see something else, something to show that he survived.

@81pdmatt actually she ends up leaving bcuz she she cant stand the sight of him in pain and basically killing himself, the only thing he had left was his fans where he views himself was the only time he wasnt a screw up and was loved, sad movie but i loved it!

Such an incomplete view of life itself I mean sadness and despair are not the only human emotions and yet that's all they chose to portray? I feel the same way about this film as I do for one that's purely violence or sex or what have you. It's cheap in it's single mindedness. A cheap film exploiting a cheap emotion

He walked the line, he took the risk, he didn't care if he dies or not... It doesn't matter if he dies after all. I begged the movie to end there and I am happy it did!

This is what I got from the ending. This match is all he has left, he looks to see if the stripper was there (which she was) but he doesn't see her so the only thing he has is finishing this match. So he hits the finisher, knowing it will kill him.
