That after noon was awesome. Shauna couldn:t remember having so much fun in a really long time. Although something was dragging her down .she wasn:t enjoying it as much as she could have. But she didn:t say anything. That would make Becca and Ashlynn bummed too, and she wasn:t going to ruin today for them too. Instead, she just went along with it.
Becca:s took them all out to find formal dresses and masks and accessories for the masquerade that was coming up in only one day. It was Friday and they had some serious shopping to do if they were going to outshine the other stars when they met the Jonas Brothers. All eyes had to be on them.
Becca found a gorgeous long, flowing, blue dress that she matched with a pair of green high heels and a green mask with peacock feathers on it.
Ashlynn could barely find anything her size, lengthwise. She was constantly muttering under her breath how horrible it was to be so tall that no one had the right sized dress for you. However, eventually, she found a long maroon halter dress, with which she paired black high-heeled strappies and a plain black mask. Becca and Shauna had immediately come to the conclusion that it was too plain, so Ashlynn gave in and glued a maroon feather in the corner and a few fake diamonds that she found in her art kit when they got back into the car.
Both of her best friends looked stunning, and Shauna had no doubt that they would give the stars with the professional stylists a run for their money, but they noticed right away that she wasn:t buying anything. She wasn:t even trying anything on. -What:s wrong Shauna, dear?- asked Becca:s mom when her daughter pointed out the fact to her. Becca, her mother, and Ashlynn all sat down next to her.
Shauna looking at her feet shyly, trying to ignore her friends worried looks. -I can:t get any new things. A formal gown just isn:t in our budget right now. I:m going to have to wear one of Shannon:s ratty old church dresses.- Shauna tried to hold back tears. She was going to a ball, she might even meet Nick Jonas, the boy she could only have dreamed about, and she was going to look like a rag doll all because her stupid step-sisters had to go and get nose jobs so that they could be like Ashley Tisdale. And even worse, she was going with Becca and Ashlynn, who would with out a doubt be some of the most stunning people there, and she would look even worse compared to them. She couldn:t hold it in. She pretty much started a flood in the shop. People started to look at them.
Ashlynn seemed to know exactly how she felt and exactly what she was thinking. She was silent for a while, staring at the tiles in the ceiling. Then she got a big smile on her face. Becca and Shauna could practically see the light bulb flash above her head.
-What?- Shauna asked, wiping her eyes and trying to stop crying as best she could, the result was soaking her sleeve and sniffling a whole lot.
-There is no way you are going to see the Jonas Brothers in hand-me-downs. And there is absolutely no way Becca and I are letting those evil step-sisters of yours keep you from going.- Becca nodded firmly. Ashlynn took out a credit card. Shauna looked at her, not knowing what to say to tell her how much that meant to her. -Don:t worry about it, Shauna.- Ashlynn paused for a second and thought. -Although you can:t see the dress just yet. But it will be perfect for you!- Ashlynn went over to the counter where the man in the suit that was just a bit to small for him was selling the masks. She pointed to one of them, but Shauna couldn:t see which one. A second later, the man walked out of the back room with a pair of keys in his hand. He opened the mask case and took out a white one with lace and glitter and detailed patterns {Think about the one from A Cinderella Story}. It was so elegant, Shauna wondered just what kind of dress Ashlynn had in mind to match it. Becca handed Shauna her blue dress and peacock mask in a bag. -Just so you wont look poor.- She said whit a seriousness that made Shauna crack up. Then Becca took Ashlynn:s shoes. They started out of the store, Becca:s mother just behind them. All of a sudden, Becca stopped cold.
-What is it, Becca?- Ashlynn asked.
-I think the Jonas Brothers were in that car!-
