With the release of over 100,000 CFS of water from Gavins Point Dam (and higher rates to follow), Sioux City and points south are preparing for a record level of flooding.

With cameras in hand, we traveled North to Sioux City to see first hand the amount of flooding already taking place.

Sioux City, Iowa & Dakota Dunes, South Dakota are the first in the path to see the effects of Gavins Point release... with many residents from the Dakota Dunes region & South Sioux, NE taking the brunt of the flooding.

Many local volunteers along with the National Guards are working around the clock trying to build up the levee system...

Farther south in Decatur, NE levels are expected to reach record highs by mid June with most of the low lying areas flooded on both the Nebraska and Iowa sides of the river. While we were there, the river was still in its banks but with the predicted levels, the city park and marina will be 10ft under water within a week.

Stopping in Blair, NE... most roads leading to the river were already closed due to minor flooding and the trailer park on the south side of Hwy-30 was inches away from flooding... City water and sewer were also threatened by the impending water.

Ft Calhoun, NE... As we made our way to the Southeast part of town we encountered a roadblock patrolled by the local sheriff. Talking with them, the lower basin was already experiencing minor flooding with Boyer Chute & CR-34 already under water.

A low level warning was issued for the Ft Calhoun Nuclear Plant as they too shore up their levee system and prepare for the worst.

The last stop of the day before loosing the light was NP Dodge Park in North Omaha, NE. This is my stomping grounds and the view atop the Humble Park overlook was breathtaking! With another 5 to 7ft of water to come, most of J.J. Pershing Dr. will be under water along with the city maintenance facility in Florence...

Downtown Omaha, NE and Council Bluff, IA are also experiencing minor flooding with record levels of water to come in the next few weeks... testing our levee system originally build in response to the last great flood of 1952.

We're all hoping for the best.. yet preparing for the worst!!!

There are 3 rivers that I know of that flow east to west. They are:

    The Colorado River

    The Columbia River and

    The Snake River.

They all flow to the west and empty into the Pacific Ocean.

  • @ems4urlife oh, i'm sorry, i forgot about east to west.

  • @SSCChivas360

Been doing some research and NOT ALL rivers run north to south. Some actually do run the other direction. Here is a list of them just here in the U.S.:

Bighorn Wyoming and Montana, USA, 336 miles

    Deschutes Oregon, USA, 250 miles

Genesee New York, USA, 144 miles

Little Bighorn, Wyoming and Montana, USA, 80 miles

This is just a short list of them.

  • @SSCChivas360

You dont need to use foul language to get ur point across. you can have a rebuttal w/o using such language.

  • I wonder how this compares to the floods of the early 1950's. My dad always told us stories about standing on the bluffs overlooking downtown Sioux City watching the Missouri River rise flooding the civic center and stockyards. I wish we could divert the Missouri to East Texas were I now live. The feral hogs aren't even coming out it is so dry.

  • @ems4urlife and about your other comment, i wasn't blaming Gavin's Point, i blaming that dam in Montana, you can't blame the last dam on the missouri river for something that happened north of the dam, and even if i was idiot, i would still have enough intelligence to know that all rivers (excluding The Nile) flow North to South.

  • @ems4urlife i'm not a fuckin expert but i know people who work at Gavin's Point, and that's exactly what they told me.don't be callin me an idiot because i am getting that information from people who know what the fuck is goin on.

  • @SSCChivas360

You r truely an idiot. The dam has been releasing above normal amounts the last 2 years. Nature has everything 2 do w/ it. WY & MT have had record snowfall this last winter. As of July 1st, they still have about 10 ft of snow on the ground, plus they have had record rains. They have received a years worth of rain in less than 2 months. If u r such such an expert on rivers, answer this question. Who builds a planned community along a major river w/o a levee system?

  • @ss11s you are all right about the media blackout! try this here on you tube: 6/24/2011 - Nebraska - Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power plant -- Radiation Test #1 -- 48.4 CPM

  • I live east of Kansas City, Missouri and while I'm not in any danger of the flooding a home my family owns is. Its never had water but in the basement but this makes me wonder now.
