The latest figures to emerge from Britain show that unemployment has risen to its highest rate in 15 years, with the number of young people without a job moving above the one million mark.

A group of unemployed youths has marched 500km, down from the northeast of England to London, as a deliberate and direct echo of the famous Jarrow march of 1936, when 200 unemployed men marched to plead for work during the depression.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from London.

  • Message to pre-graduates...Study with better courses problem solved

  • I don't suppose these guys refused their benefits for the days they weren't looking for work?

  • @fairy21ify If your child doesn't want to go to the Uni and chose a less skilled profession instead, those 30K are more than enough to give a nice deposit for a 1 bed-room flat where the repayments will be affordable. Youngsters need to learn to start from the beginning and live by their means. A bank loan is only an interesting option when its interest rates are lower than the interest rates you get from the money you have saved and invested somewhere else.Otherwise use your cash.

  • @fairy21ify When your child is born you should start saving at least 100 GBP a month (that's 25 GBP a week), by the age of 18 he/she will have a savings account with 30,614.37 GBP. These calculations were made based on an interest rate of 3.5 APR tax-free, which is what banks are currently offering. If you cannot spare 25 GBP a week for the future of your child, you shouldn't have had a child in first place. I guess 30K+ in savings is more than enough to pay for an average Uni.

  • @WW3HasToCome U cant be that harsh, the situation is bad out there and there are youngsters who are genuinely trying to find work out there!! In regards to saving money, it really depends on your financial bkground and whethere you do have the bank of mum and dad. If your from a poor bkground can you really save that much ???

  • I've been out of work since april last year after being made redundent by the goverment. Things are really bad out there, i'm on JSA but to be honest i don't think i'll get work again.
