Prior to Uptown being the coffee house and jazz Mecca that it is today, it was a slum containing a diverse group of people from all countries of the world. Throughout the seventies and through the nineties, many turf gangs fought to control neighborhoods the old school way. Such gangs as: the Gaylord's, Wilson Boys, Uptown Rebels and the Kenmore Boys, fought against Gangster Disciples, Black P-Stones, Latin Kings, and the Simon City Royals for the blocks they held. Most of the White Greaser gangs were comprised of Southern Whites and Chippewa Indians. The Sunnyside and Magnolia Gaylord's were over 50 strong during their time in Uptown. Most of the Uptown gangs were gone by the early 2000's.

The latest gang (and largest) to takeover the Uptown area is "The Realtors".

  • My dad was in a gang called the Esquires of Cicero. They went on to found the 12 Street Players.

  • Thank you very much. I am going to add this to the Stone Greaser history. I appreciate you taking the time to write. If your father comes up with anything else, please don't hesistate to write.

  • Very cool project on our fascinating hood, but imo it would be better without the adolescent and obnoxious soundtrack .

  • I had litte choice on the songtrack. I select from the non copyright selections provided by YouTube. I thought that would be better with sound. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write!

  • @furley718 That is what I thought? I never heard of the Gaylords, Kenmore Boys, or the SCR's fighting any gang named the Bishops in that area. I know in ROgers Park there was a Saints gang, but that was a group from Evanston who called themselves the Saints, not the ones from the Back of the Yards. Maybe there was a group guys with the lastname of Bishop, or somethinmg.
