United Nations, Geneva, 24 April 2009 - At the end of the UN conference on racism, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, has deplored what she called a widespread and highly organised campaign of disinformation which had led to some countries boycotting the conference.

She told journalists in Geneva that it was "extraordinary" that countries that had already agreed the outcome text decided to boycott the conference. She said she hoped that they would implement the findings and return to the process.

The conference is a follow up to the Durban conference on racism held in 2001.

Without naming countries, the High Commissioner said many ministers she had spoken to had described the whole Durban process as a hate fest and anti-Semitic, but she pointed out that the outcome document deplored anti-Semitism as well as Islamaphobia.

The High Commissioner said she had been called dangerous and ludicrous but despite these personal attacks on her, she judged that the conference had been a success.
