what i like to do is mine a stairway to bedrock level, and maybe put some stair blocks down for added leisure, and afterwards i use f3 to determine where diamonds might be, a way i get lots of diamond (and other ore) is by clearing out dirt and gravel and with this technique you'll need LOTS of shovels for speed. i hope this helps ;)
